Microscopic endodontics
Endodontics treats pulp diseases, most often caused by bacteria. The first stage toward pulp inflammation is a carious cavity. At this stage the tooth usually does not hurt yet. It is worth seeking conservative care, for example a filling. In that situation root canal treatment is often not yet needed. Only when bacteria reach the pulp through a growing cavity does pulpitis develop. The tooth then often hurts (thermal sensitivity) and endodontic treatment is required. Bacteria in deep cavities are the most common but not the only cause of pulp disease. Other causes include leaking fillings and prosthetic work (crowns, bridges), gum inflammation and tooth trauma. Endodontic treatment starts by removing decay and old fillings to assess damage and suitability for further care. The dentist then prepares and rebuilds the tooth for root canal therapy.
It means removing bacteria from root canals with special instruments and then filling them with a dedicated material. We use a rubber dam — a latex isolation cover that effectively protects against saliva bacteria. A rubber dam improves safety and comfort for both patient and dentist. For endodontics we use modern equipment: ultrasound, rotary instruments and warm gutta-percha canal obturation. We work under a microscope to find narrow canals, remove old cements and broken instruments, and seal canals tightly. This greatly improves success and helps keep teeth that once would have been extracted.
